Children who have
suffered abuse are often in need of someone they can
talk to who will help them work through their feelings
about what they experienced. After the child has
come to our agency for an exam or an interview, it is
time to begin the healing process. That is what
counseling can do. One of the most damaging
aspects of child abuse is the violation of trust, safety
and control when the abuse comes from someone they know
and love. And, as we see here at the clinic, it is
often the case that the abuser is someone the child
knows and loves. Of the 96 children we have seen
here so far this year (Jan-mid June, 2005), 1/2 of the
suspected perpetrators were relatives or lived in the
home. When possible, Julie Oates, our child
therapist, can work with the child and family on some of
the issues that may arise for the child. We may also
refer the child to receive counseling at another agency,
possibly one closer to home. Adult family members
may also benefit from talking with a professional about
the effects of the abuse on them. Appropriate
referrals will be made in this circumstance.
